A Cat - Tharsis A Series of Cats from October 2017
Cat -Tharsis 2017 Artist Statement - Sarah Irwin
Catharsis (Google Definition): the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions. Cat -Tharsis: the process of changing old beliefs, systems of working, and one's previous attitude about what they "should" be doing with their life, by making a series of cat paintings in a condensed period of time.
Part of this "cat-tharsis" happened as a result of a visit to the bank, and part of it comes from (I'm sure), a landmark birthday. It is a powerful thing to know what is missing from your life, and to also have the wisdom to know you have enough, despite conventional measures. There is clarity in deciding what you actually want to do with the remaining lives/life you have left, and then going in that direction. Being told your contribution to the world does not matter isn't true, yet this is where many quit. We stop practicing, sell the instrument, give away the paints, burn the papers, hide the knitting project. This is what I thought about doing while I painted cats. Also I thought about this: I have seen the magic of Art, felt it, known it, shared it, bought it, sold it, and there will be no quitting. I understand where my (lack of?) elegance is. I know how many lives I have already spent. Now with a few whiskers of my own I recognise and seek the useful instincts, independent natures, and gracefulness of cats.
